I am very pleased to welcome you to the British Council Pakistan website.
We have been working in Pakistan since 1948 through programmes focussed on Arts, Education, English, Society, Exams, and have recently re-launched our libraries in Lahore and Karachi. Across the four provinces of Balochistan, Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as well as in Pakistan Administered Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, we continue to build connections between Pakistan and the UK. Our offices in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad act as hubs to a network of partnerships.
We are investing in Pakistan, growing our work in English, Arts and Education and commissioning more research. So far we have published reports on mainstreaming disability exploring the country’s creative industries and their potential, digital citizenship, social entrepreneurship and many more.
Our aim is to work with partners and communities to build sustainable relationships. Recently, we scaled-up our work with the Punjab Education and English Language Initiative (also called PEELI), working with the Government of Punjab to improve English Language teaching skills for 300,000 teachers in schools in Punjab. We are discussing similar programmes in Sindh and KPK. We have announced a partnership with the Government of KPK to develop work in English and Education. Working with our partners in Arts, we expand our activities, an example of this is the Women of the World festival held in Karachi in May 2016 which was attended by more than 9,000 people.
Young people are a focus of our work and through our Active Citizens and DOSTI projects since 2009 we have mobilised more than 40,000 young people for social good and community development under our Active Citizens Programme. We are also very excited about our plans to increase engagement with you across the country through the launch of our libraries in Lahore and Karachi and accompanying digital offer. We aim to provide a 21st century library experience and learning environment for Pakistan with a programme of activity throughout the year.
This website is your resource for everything you want to know about British Council Pakistan including our events, activities and plans. We hope you find it useful and we look forward to seeing you at our events and on line.
